We take the security of our website seriously. By doing so it helps to protect your payment and personal data. What steps have we taken to make our site more secure?
Secure Website Hosting
First we started with a good hosting partner. We use SiteGround hosting which is specifically built to be secure for our website. They are an industry leader and provide 24/7 monitoring of our site from various attacks such as DDoS (Denial of Service) attacks and other attacks. They are trusted by over 1.5 Million website owners to provide secure hosting.
Next we use industry standard SSL encryption on our entire website, not just the checkout page, so that any and all information sent to us is secured. What is SSL encryption? Take a look at this definition from SSL.com:
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.
To be able to create an SSL connection a web server requires an SSL Certificate. When you choose to activate SSL on your web server you will be prompted to complete a number of questions about the identity of your website and your company. Your web server then creates two cryptographic keys – a Private Key and a Public Key.
What does all that mean? When you enter information on our website such as your name and address on the checkout page and then click on “Place Order”, that information is encrypted by your web browser before it is sent to us. Even if a hacker could intercept that information, which is highly unlikely, it would be encrypted and unusable. This ensures that your personal and payment data is kept safe.
An SSL Certificate provides proof that you are actually at mainelysurvival.com and haven’t been hijacked to another website. When you visit our website with your browser our website asks the browser to connect using SSL as discussed above. Before your browser will do that it asks for a SSL certificate from our website that provides proof that our website is actually mainelysurvival.com. Once that is established all information between your browser is secured. This ensures that your personal and payment data is kept safe.
Secure Payment Processors
To keep your payment information safe and secure we have teamed up with two of the leading payment processors for online ordering. We use Stripe for credit card processing and PayPal. When you enter your payment information at checkout on our website and place your order that payment information is sent directly to the payment processor you selected using SSL as mentioned above so that it is encrypted. We never store any of that information. Their software communicates with our website to inform us and you whether the payment was successful. This ensures that your payment data is kept safe.
Website Monitoring and Hardening
We use tools from Sucuri an industry leader in website security to monitor our website for suspicious activity and to harden it against attacks. What exactly does that mean? Imagine that you were going to have a security system installed in your home. This allows you to be notified anytime there is suspicious activity in or around your home. That is similar to monitoring a website for suspicious activity. When the alarm system is installed it would also make sense to check all doors, windows, etc. to make sure an intruder couldn’t gain entry. This is similar to hardening a website. It checks the website for any possible problems and fixes them so that an intruder can’t gain access. This ensures that any data stored on our website is secure.
These are just a few of the key security features we have implemented on our website to ensure that your personal and payment data are kept secure. We hope that this helps you to rest assured that we take security seriously and that you can feel confident that your personal and payment data will be protected.
